January Newsletter: Rescue from Without
Happy New Year!
I hope 2025 has been a great start for you. I’m back at my day job and into the swing of my syllabus planning.
I remember when I was asked to write one up for Kitchen Table back in 2020 for the first time I was absolutely terrified. I’d been out of my MFA program for a few years and knew I wanted teaching to be the way in which I gave to the community but I had no idea where to start or if anyone would even want to take a class with a newbie teaching artist.
This year makes the fifth I’ve been instructing and I still break out into a profuse sweat every single time I sign to zoom in and welcome a cohort to a new lecture or meeting. Perspiration aside, there’s a level of comfort now. I know what I value as an educator and the importance of maintaining an atmosphere of safety for students during each meeting.
One of the most important skills, in art and life, is intuition. That deep knowing in the face of seeming uncertainty. It’s a north star of sorts leading me home to myself. I’ve always loved the hero’s journey and the wise figures on the path who point the hero in the right direction but I’d recently been told “no one is coming to save you” which is heart wrenching and empowering at the same time.
We can have companions and help along our paths but it’s up to us to walk it. What do you value? What’s your relationship with your intuition?
