Riley Zito Grubstreet Writers Introduction to Speculative Fiction February 2024

“Silk was very knowledgeable and thoughtful about cultural issues and creating an inclusive environment. She also made sure to sponsor new writers from diverse backgrounds in each of the classes. I’m excited to leave this workshop, knowing new writers that are queer and people of color to read the stories of. She also made sure to give thoughtful comments to make sure that people were being intentional with their language, such as discussing why the word primitive has been used against native people. I feel inspired, leaving this class to engage with new genres within speculative fiction and read new stories. I feel like she did a good job, balancing the new and more experienced members of the class by adding challenging new material, even while giving basic descriptions of higher level genres.”

Student Ginny Boehm The Porch Intro to Spec Fic Fall 2023

“Silk Jazmyne went above and beyond to prepare inclusive and equitable course material. Her lectures focused on the diverse and varied pulse of contemporary and past speculative fiction. Thanks to Silk Jazmyne, I was introduced to N.K Jemisin, P. Djeili Clark, Ciannon Smart, and Clarice Lispector. Silk Jazmyne not only made a syllabus full of relevant and illuminative texts but also adjusted the syllabus in response to student requests for a workshop element. She incorporated music and film partly to help ground us in the multimedia context of contemporary readers, but also out of a passion for speculative genres no matter what form they take. Silk Jazmyne’s joy for the genre led me to think more expansively about the potential of non-literary fiction. As she pushed my class to think bigger about speculative fiction, she also encouraged us to dig deeper for our own fiction. Her teaching philosophy held that the speculative elements of fiction heighten emotion and storytelling, and she helped me understand that literary devices should be in service to strong feeling, not the other way around.”

ANON Student Spring 2023

“The instructor shared the history and development of speculative fiction. Plus she helped understand the breadth of the genre. I did not realize what counted under this umbrella. The instructor also explained cultural distinctions between magical realism rooted in Latin America and fabulism beyond it. Additionally, she covered Afrofuturism versus African futurism”

ANON Student Summer 2023

“Silk Jazmyne led by example and created an inclusive environment. From the type of works we read to her asking the class if there were any triggers we had, I thought she created a welcome space for all of us.”
